Who manages admissions

All admissions for Mercia Northridge School are managed by Sheffield City Council. This includes applications made during the normal Year 7 admissions round and in-year applications for Years 7 to 11.

Although Mercia Northridge School is its own admissions authority as an academy, it has chosen to continue using the Local Authority’s admissions arrangements. Applications are therefore administered by the Local Authority Secondary Admissions Team.

Our approach to admissions

Mercia Northridge School is a non-selective secondary school serving the local community in north Sheffield. Our intake reflects a comprehensive mix of socio-economic backgrounds and cultures, and we take great pride in offering a rich curriculum that is broad, balanced and inclusive.

Families are encouraged to consider Mercia Northridge School carefully before applying, ensuring that the school’s values, expectations and culture align with their aspirations for their child.

Open events and visits

Prospective families are strongly encouraged to attend our open events, which take place in the autumn term. These events provide an opportunity to learn more about our ethos, curriculum and pastoral support, and to hear directly from staff and pupils.

Visits outside of the usual admissions cycle may also be arranged, particularly for in-year applications.

Our next open evening for prospective Year 7 pupils will be held on Thursday 17 September 4.30-6.30pm.

How to apply

Applications for a Year 7 place must be made through Sheffield City Council. The closing date for expressing preferences is usually mid-October. Parents and carers are advised to check the Local Authority admissions booklet or website for confirmed dates.

National Offer Day is 1 March each year, or the next working day if this falls on a weekend.

Full details on how to apply can be found on the Sheffield City Council school admissions website.

Transition to Mercia Northridge School

Mercia Northridge School works closely with feeder primary schools to support a smooth and positive transition into Year 7, so that we learn as much as possible about pupils before they arrive with us. Each year group is supported by a head of year and engagement leader to ensure strong pastoral care and continuity as pupils settle into secondary school life.

Our Year 7 Inauguration Programme in September, conducted before other year groups return to school, ensures every child is inducted into all parts of Mercia Northridge School life. The activities and lessons over the inauguration days ensure that ethos, routines and expectations are explicitly taught, practised, and familiar from the very beginning so that all new Year 7 pupils are successful from the start of their time at Mercia Northridge School.
